Hot Water, Metal and Moulding - Where Radiators Fit

It might seem obvious to most people how radiators work and where they should be fixed but before you choose your design and order your radiators read on...

Central heating is a wonderful invention that really took off in the 1970s when gas powered boilers became more popular than a coal fuelled real fire. Coal mining in the UK was hit by pit closures throughout the seventies so faced with a lack of heating families instead installed gas fires and central heating at the same time if they didn't already benefit from it.

How Radiators Work - Simply Radiators

Radiators work by heating the air in a room once they've been warmed up by hot water running through their pipes from a central boiler in a house. The heat of the hot water is conducted through the metal casing then radiates out into the room warming the whole atmosphere. Radiators and central heating is controlled by switches and timers based on thermostats. A house normally has one main thermostat but individual radiators can also have their own thermostats attached to the valves where the water enters from the main pipes. This extra flexibility means that lesser used rooms can save energy and your bills by not heating them up to full when the room isn't in use. Timers can also be set to warm the house up in advance of you stepping out of bed in the morning and switching the heating off when you know you're not at home.

Where Should Radiators be Installed for Maximum Heat

Radiators should generally be installed in the coldest part of a room. This is usually directly underneath windows, in hallways, and near doors. This is an easy decision to make when you have a standard four-walled room with one entrance and exit, but if your home or office is open-plan, or an irregular shape more thought must go into your initial planning. Kitchens require some heating even if the oven or cooker generates a lot of natural heat on a day to day basis and bathrooms can benefit from practical solutions such as heated towel rails. If your landing or hallway don't have a source of heat you'll find that once a door is opened into a room the heat will escape quickly, chilling the whole house down.
