Radiators - Problem Solved

Here is a basic guide to problem solving when it comes to your home radiators.

All of the radiators in your home source heat from your boiler to circulate warm air throughout the various rooms. If for some reasons one of your radiators has stopped working or all of your radiators are not working efficiently there are a number of things you can do before calling out the professionals.

Radiators - Assess the Problem

One of the hardest things about radiator maintenance is finding the root of the problem. Here are a few problems you may encounter and the solutions that can ensure your heating system is put back on track at minimum cost.

Individual Radiators - If you notice that one of your radiators is not warming up but the rest of them are working efficiently there is something you can try before calling out a maintenance specialist. This minor problem can cause major inconvenience as if this radiator is solely responsible for the output of heat for a single room it will be missed significantly, especially if it is situated in a bedroom or a bathroom. Identify the valve on this particular radiator, it should be at the bottom, and check it is open. If it isn't open turn it to a warm setting and allow it time to heat up. If this isn't successful you may need to call in the professionals.

Multiple Radiators -If none of your radiators are heating up efficiently even though your boiler is working and your valves are open this is one of the bigger problems on the scale. Ensure your boiler is working and make significant checks on your thermostat and timer. If you are still experiencing problems it may be time to contact your local handy man.

Insufficient Heat - Another common problem when it comes to radiators is if the bottom half of your radiator heats up efficiently but the top part remains cool. This is usually a result of trapped air in the radiator that blocks the flow of heat. In this case bleeding your radiators is an effective solution and is something that you can do yourself. Locate your radiator key and insert it into the bleed valve at the top of your radiator. Beware of opening the valve fully as this will result in an outpour of water. Once you have successfully released the air you can close the valve.
