Are Cast Iron Radiators Eco-Friendly?

In these times of economic strife and rising living costs we thought it would be a good idea to do a piece on Eco Friendliness. We’re going to write about Cast Iron Radiators and if they are as eco-friendly as modern radiators.

Cast Iron Radiators are very pleasing on the eye and can give any room a classic, traditional appearance. However their classic appearance can give people the idea that they are old fashioned and do not have the same energy efficiency as the newer steel and aluminium radiators but this isn’t true.

One argument is that Cast Iron Radiators can take longer to heat up than a flat panel radiator therefore it uses more energy to heat, but they also take longer to cool down due to the thick Cast Iron material; this makes the efficiencies of cast iron radiators and steel/aluminium approximately the same due to the faster cooling of steel and aluminium. As soon as your Cast Iron radiator is up to heat you can turn off your boiler and enjoy the warmth of the Cast Iron for a longer period of time than you would with steel or aluminium. In fact most money saving guides will point you towards home insulation and more efficient boilers if you’re looking to save money on your energy bills. A Cast Iron Radiator combined with a well-insulated house can potentially bring hours of sumptuous warmth whilst also saving you on wall space when compared to the average steel or aluminium radiator.

The downsides of owning a cast iron radiator is that your room will take longer to get up to heat compared to a steel radiator and the depth of the radiator could be problematic to some as they are certainly thicker and come a further distance from the wall than the modern slim line radiators. However you cannot beat its looks and appeal if you are trying to achieve a traditional, contemporary look within your household, a Cast Iron can really complete the room, creating a lovely feature and will certainly be a talking point with guests who are visiting your house for the first time.

So the main question you need to ask yourself is what style of radiator you would like to have in your house as buying Cast Iron is just as Eco-Friendly as buying "modern” radiators.
